OUR MISSION

AIMGA is committed to the responsible, informed, and equitable integration of international graduate physicians into the Canadian Healthcare System.  The Association aims for the recognition of skills and experience gained outside Canada, without compromising current Canadian medical ideals or standards.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to integrate IMGs into the Alberta Health Care System, thus working towards the benefit of the growing population of Alberta.

OUR BELIEFS

  1. International Medical Graduates represent a skilled and professional workforce that should be utilized to support and improve Alberta's health care system.
  2. There should be fair and equitable access for all Alberta's international medical graduates to the medical licensing and training programs according to the Canadian standards.
  3. All Albertans should have the best health care in the world.
  4. There is a physician shortage in the province and that this shortage is affecting the quality of health care received by Albertans.
  5. As Alberta's immigrant population is rapidly increasing, there is a need for IMGs who can understand and respect the needs of Alberta's culturally diverse population.
  6. Dialogue and cooperation with decision makers at all government levels will promote the smooth integration of Alberta's IMGs into the Canadian health care system.

OUR HISTORY

In the spring of 2000, the Department of Family Practice at the University of Alberta, in partnership with the Alberta Network of Immigrant Women (ANIW), conducted a survey to build the profile of unlicensed IMGs in the Alberta.  Following the survey, ANIW organized focus groups in Calgary and Edmonton.  At the focus group discussions, it was decided that ANIW would assist the IMGs to form a support group.  It was there that the Alberta International Medical Graduates Association was born.  The first meeting of AIMGA was held in December 2000.  AIMGA was later incorporated under the Society's Act as a non-profit organization.
